Magnesium in a Nutshell

2 min read

I have chosen to focus on magnesium because of its direct correlation with exercise and thereby, Pilates. Today, we’ll be taking a brief look at magnesium, and I’ll leave some further reading for you more enthusiastic bunnies.

What is Magnesium?

Magnesium is a mineral that is essential for the health of your body.

Why do we need it?

Magnesium does all kinds of wonderful things for our bodies- it helps us sleep well, it gives us healthy muscles, bones, nerves and blood sugar levels.

How can I tell if I’m low in magnesium?

Cramps are a great indicator! Nausea, loss of appetite, mood changes and abnormal heart beat are also other indicators. Of course, these can all be symptoms for other issues. You can always do a blood test or, try taking a supplement to see if it improves your symptoms.

What is the best bioavailable magnesium?

Magnesium Glycinate is a good one and known to be less likely to cause stomach upset. However, it always best to speak to a health professional who knows your individual situation before pursuing a long-term intake of magnesium. It also helps convert Vitamin D into its active form.

Can I take too much magnesium?

Yes, it is possible for anyone to take too much of anything. I once had a magnesium bath obviously using a different type of magnesium (magnesium salts), followed by some supplements. A few hours later, I was running to the bathroom!

What to look out for when buying magnesium oral supplements?

A big thing, especially if you are taking other supplements, is to check both the one you’re planning to purchase, and the ones you already have whether, there is already magnesium in them or other vitamins/minerals in the magnesium. You don’t want to double up!

Can I just eat food to get my magnesium?

Some people can, yes. But it depends on your bodies own ability to process magnesium. You can find this out but doing a blood test and checking your levels. If they are low, start focusing on magnesium rich foods and if they still test low, try a supplement. As a food, magnesium can be found in almonds, cashews, peanuts, brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat bread, spinach, avocados and bananas to name a few as well as my personal best friend, dark chocolate.

In conclusion: Magnesium is an essential mineral vital for your health and indications that you are low in it can come in various form. If you are concerned about your levels, you can always get tested or try a supplement. For those who wish to do further reading, I have put some links below. Happy learning!
